The Swedish Ardennes

Amid the green meadows, tranquil pastures, and shady forests of our Slovak homeland—in Uhliska—we, as breeders, tend to a legacy that is firmly rooted in the earth and reaches high into the future. It is the breeding of draft horses, and our hearts beat for the Swedish Ardennes.

Its origins lie in the mares and stallions we brought home from the north, from Sweden. From this foundation, our herd grows steadily, thoughtfully, and sustainably, guided by clearly defined bloodlines and a well-defined goal: to produce a strong, well-proportioned cold-blooded horse with a solid foundation, a clear disposition, and a strong spirit—a horse that excels in daily work.

The Ardennes horse, bred for fields and forests, proves itself faithful in hauling timber even on steep terrain, reliable in a team, and a joyful companion in a carriage and on a quiet ride. It is a horse for work and home, a friend to the family and a companion to the farmer. Its build has evolved over centuries: shaped in the 19th century through careful selection, bred from local cold-blooded horses crossed with Ardennes blood and other robust lines—hence its resilience, intelligence, and strength.

But what ennobles it most is its nature: its calm loyalty, its eagerness to learn, and its friendly disposition. We nurture and enhance these gifts in Uhliska—through natural husbandry on pastures and meadows, through consistent training in the woods, and through carefully considered breeding.

Thus, anyone looking for draft horses in Slovakia will find partners here who possess strength, character, and that willingness that has always been the hallmark of the noble horse in the eyes of humans.
